Quick Summary

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) tests your ability to understand Standard North American English. The TOEFL is written and administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and used by North American colleges and graduate schools to evaluate the level of English-language proficiency of international student applicants.

Required TOEFL scores vary between schools, so check with the schools you're considering to attend beforehand.

Who needs to take the TOEFL?

Generally speaking, TOEFL exams are required for international applicants. A student is usually exempted from the TOEFL requirement if the official language of his or her country is English, or if the student has recently earned a degree at an English-speaking university. Check with your institution for more information.
