The Obligatory Free Stuff Page

College wouldn't be college without tons of giveaways and free stuff. Everything from t-shirts to keychain bottle openers to toothpaste; you name it, it can probably be had for free.

What we've got here is a collection of free software, entirely without obligation. Unlike file sharing services' content, the software here is 100% legal and 100% free. You won't find a better collection without lots of research.

First and foremost, OpenOffice gives you virtually all the benefits of that other office software suite for none of the $400+ price. Word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, diagramming, it's all in there in a familiar, easy to use interface. Available for both Windows and Linux.

Second, check out Crimson Editor. When you don't want to use a full powered word processor but Notepad won't do, and you want to be able to work with a variety of computer languages, Crimson Editor takes the cake. Available for Windows.

Got archived files? WinZip is a useful utility, but it's not free. UltimateZip, however, is free for anyone to use, has the same power and interface, and works with a wider variety of files. For Windows.

MP3s play fine in Windows Media Player, but the clunky interface and long load times make it less than ideal. That's where WinAmp comes in. Fast, free, and stable, WinAmp is the best, fastest media player available. For Windows.

Internet Explorer is the default browser on Windows PCs, but it's not the best one available. Mozilla Firebird conforms to all W3C specifications, is fast, light, and brings tabbed browsing to your desktop, as well as built-in Google search and support multiple home pages. Got more than one e-mail account? Get ePrompter. It can check the mail for up to 16 accounts, including Hotmail and Yahoo! accounts, presenting them in one tight, small interface. Available for Windows.
